War Memorial
The War Memorial on the High Street near to Church Street commemorates Hartfield residents who died in both the First and Second World Wars.
James Castle has spent 8 years researching all the names on the War Memorial. He says that Dan Maher has been invaluable in checking accuracy and finding some excellent source material with the last two years being very much a team effort. When 15 individuals who were not included on the memorial were discovered, Dan persuaded the Parish Council to have the extra names added during 2014.
A complete record of all the names on the Hartfield and Colemans Hatch War memorials from both World Wars has been added below. This list is in alphabetical order and shows birth and death dates and the location(s) of the name. The Parish Magazine will be carrying information on a number of the names in each issue. Read a little more about it in the meeting report for November 2014.
In addition to the Memorial in the High Street there is an additional memorial on the grass of the churchyard immediately through the Lych Gate. This memorial was erected by Mrs Peel, the mother of Charles Peel whose information is on the alphabetical list. He is also on the High Street Memorial.
This is the Memorial plaque in the Coleman’s Hatch Church
James points out that there are spelling mistakes on the earlier carved names but his listing corrects these. A visible example is Private W Summer on the top row of the right hand side. His surname was SUMNER.
The list below is a simple alphabetical list of all names with their birth and death dates and the location(s) of their memorial(s). The full list with details of each individual has now been added as a separate page. Click on this link Memorial Details.

Hi
In the research for Blackham men who served in WW1 we have come across brothers Wm and Frederick Boakes.
The CWGC give Frederick George Boakes, living at Hethe Cottage Blackham, as killed on 7-7-16 but he is not on the Blackham Lychgate nor on the Roll of Honour inside the church. In 1911 he was living at Hollywich Cottages, Hartfield with his parents, Richard and Elizabeth, but again I can’t see him on any of the pictures on your site.
What we know about him is on our site http://www.blackham-village.co.uk/boakes%20wm%20and%20fred.htm but I wondered if you had any more information.
Richard Coomber
Richard, I have passed your enquiry on to James Castle and Dan Maher who did all the research on the Hartfield and District memorials.I am sure if they have any information they will make contact.
I understand that James has been in touch and some information passed over, thank you.
Hello,
If this rememberance site is still being updated I have all the relevant information you may need regarding George and Mark Maskell. They are my great Uncles.
hello Jon,
I would be very happy to add further detail to the Maskell entries collected by James Castle and I know he would be only too pleased to correspond if you would like to do this first. I can pass him your email address if you wish. Regards, Chris
Dear Chris
Please pass my e-mail address on to Jon Maskell. The research is never complete and there is nothing better than making contact with the families themselves.
I now have details for those on the Holtye war memorial which has now reverted to the parish of Hartfield.
Best wishes
James
All done, thank you. Let me know if you have more to add in due course. Chris
Hello Jon, James Castle whose research has provided the information for this section of the website would be delighted to correspond and as he says there is nothing better than making contact with the families themselves so he asked me to pass on his email address, jamescastle@btinternet.com
Are there some Sumner names on the war memorial. My grandma was called marjorie Sumner and always said she was headmistress of the, school until 1943 when her parents died in a bomb at the east Grinstead cinema. They were Harry and Ellen’s Bramwell. She also said she taught christopher Robin. Dud he go to hartfield school as a child?
There is just one. Private Alfred William Sumner is on the War Memorial with details that you can read on this site. He was born in 1877 and was killed in action in 1916 on the Somme age 39. He did have 2 daughters born 1900 and 1902 but you will have to research the family on line. There is information on how to do this in Parcell’s Postings.
Hello Chris,
Please may you put me in contact with Ann Bonham. This is a very positive link.
Best wishes
James
In the table above the entry for Peel DoD should be 1915not 1914 as listed.
Very useful resource, thank you.
