Private Alfred William Sumner, SD/3024, 13th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, was born near Tunbridge in 1877. He lived at 2 New Red House, Cat Street, Hartfield and enlisted in Eastbourne. He was killed in action on 21st October 1916 near Serre, Somme, France, age 39 and is buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.2, France: Grave XI. C. 13.
He was the son of Albert and Katharine (Card) Sumner. He was married to Emma Jane Sumner (later Crittenden), (Abt 1877 – 1947) and had the following children; Edith 1900, Florence 1902. His pre-war occupation was a Gardener, possibly for Mr McAndrew.
