Private Doctor Wheatley, S/260, 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, was born in Hartfield on 20th January 1888. He lived in Colemans Hatch, Legers Row, Hartfield and Brighton and he enlisted in Brighton. He was killed in action at the Battle of Artois- Richebourg L’Avoue on 9th May 1915 near Bethune, Pas de Calais, France, age 26 and has no known grave and is listed on the Le Touret Memorial: Panel 20 and 21.
He was the son of Isaac (1850) and Rosanna (Coates) (1853) Wheatley His pre-war occupation was a General Labourer (Reservist in the 3rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, Special Reserve). He transferred to the 2nd Battalion in August 1914 and was posted to France on 20th September 1914. He was wounded by a shell on 10th December 1914 and was hospitalized at Rouen.
