Private Ernest Stanley Boakes, 4569036th Company, Machine Gun Corps, was born in Hartfield in 1897. He lived at Rogers Town, Holtye, and enlisted on 10th May 1916 in Chichester. He died on 26th April 1917 at Etaples hospital, Pas de Calais, France of gun shot wounds to head sustained on 9th April 1917, age 19 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery : Grave XVIII. A. 5A.
He was the son of John (1851) and Hester (Fermor) (1856) Boakes. His pre-war occupation was an Agricultural Labourer. He was originally in the East Surrey Regiment, 21102.
