Lance Corporal Ernest William May, G/3753, 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, was born in Catsfield, Sussex in 1889. He lived at The Farm, Old Lodge, Nutley and enlisted in Eastbourne. He was killed in action during the first Battle of Delville Wood during the Battle of the Somme.on 18th August 1916 near Thiepval, Somme, France, age 26 and has no known grave and is listed on the Thiepval Memorial: Pier and Face 7 C.
He was the son of Harry (Henry) (1855) and Maria Markis (1856) May His pre-war occupation was a Gardener.
