Sapper Ewbert John Shelley, 2209, 1st/3rd Kent Field Company, Royal Engineers, was born in Frant in 1895. He lived at Holly Croft, Hartfield, and enlisted in May 1915 in Gillingham. He drowned on board M.S. Hythe after a collision with the Sarnia. on 28th October 1915 near Mudros Bay, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, age 20 and has no known grave and is listed on the Helles Memorial: Panel 23 to 25 or 325 to 328.
He was the son of William (1866) and Alice (1864) Shelley. He was known as Jack.
