Frederick Samuel Fry

Company Sergeant Major Frederick Samuel Fry, L/5733, “B” Company. 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, was born at Brookshill Farm House, Hartfield in September 1880. He lived at Chartners Farm, Hartfield (1889-1893) and enlisted on 13th September 1898 at Tunbridge Wells in the 3rd Royal Sussex Regiment, age 18. He was killed in action on 25th September 1915 near Lens, France, age 35 and has no known grave and is listed on the Loos Memorial : Panel 69 to 73. 

He was the son of Albert Edward (1857-1890) and Harriet Annie (Grove) (1853-1893) Fry. He was married to Alice Maud Fry (Witkowski) and had the following children; George, Albert Percy 1911-1989, John S 1912-1929. His pre-war occupation was a Professional Soldier in the Royal Sussex Regiment. Prior1898 he was a Labourer.
