Lance Corporal George Wheatley G/8, 6th Battalion, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), was born in Hartfield in 1888. He lived in Hartfield and enlisted in Maidstone. He was killed in action on 3rd May 1917 near Arras, France, age 32 and has no known grave and is listed on the Arras Memorial: Bay 7.
He was the son of George (1856) and Ellen (Everest) (1866) Wheatley. His pre-war occupation was in the employ of Nelson Miles, as a farm labourer possibly at Stairs Farm, Hartfield. His brother William James Wheatley died on 7th April 1915.
