Henry James Veness, a civilian farmer, was born in Hollington, Sussex in 1895. He lived at Old Possingford Farm, Hartfield. He was killed by enemy bombing on 9th July 1943 near Rice Brothers, London Road, East Grinstead, age 48 when a Luftwaffe Dornier 217 dropped its bombs on the centre of East Grinstead. A 50k bomb landed on Rice Brothers in London Road. He is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, Hartfield: Lower Churchyard D64.
He was the son of Jesse (1855) and Mary Jane (1857) Veness. He was married to Elsie May (Geliffe) Veness and had the following children; Peter Robert, George, Frank and Arthur. His occupation was a Farmer. He was known as Harry.
