Sapper John Arthur Medhurst, 146264, 91st Field Company, Royal Engineers, was born in Hartfield about 1892. He lived at Vine House, Hartfield and enlisted in East Grinstead. He died of a shell wound – head compound fracture, sustained in the First Battle of the Scarpe during the Arras Offensive 9th April 1917 at 8th Casualty Clearing Station, Duisans, Pas-de-Calais, France, age 25 and is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, Pas-de-Calais, France: Grave I. L. 1.
He was the son of Arthur Bromley (1861-1917) and Fannie (Morley) (1862-1948) Medhurst. His pre-war occupation was with H&E Waters of Forest Row, then with Hobbs builders of Tunbridge Wells. Arthur was a builder and Land Agent to Earl de la Warr. 1911 Census lists him as a Carpenter.
