Private John Stevenson, 17604, 23rd Company, Machine Gun Corps, was born in Hartfield in 1892. It is possible he may have lived at Furnace Farm, Newbridge, Colemans Hatch. He was killed in action on 27th October 1916 near Meaulte, Somme, France age 24 and is buried in Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte: Grave II. B. 16.
He was the son of John (1870) and Elizabeth Stevenson (1868). His pre-war occupation was as a Regular Soldier serving in the 1st West Yorkshire Regiment. His brother George died on 5th July 1916.
