6th Battalion, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), was born in Hartfield in 1877. He lived at Green Cottages and Ten Acre Wood, Hartfield and enlisted on 14th January 1915 in Brighton. He was killed in action on 8th October 1915 near Loos-en-Gohelle, Pas de Calais, France, age 37 and has no known grave and is listed on the Loos Memorial.
He was the son of William (1854-1919?) and Harriet (1853-1914) Bassett. He was married to Lucy Anne (Neal) Bassett. (Abt 1877 ñ 1947) and had the following children; Ada (1898-1970), May (1899), Lucy (1902-1990), Ivy (1905), Margaret (1909-1913), James W (1912-1913). His pre-war occupation was a Plumber. His brother Albert died on 6th February 1919.
