Lance Corporal William James Wheatley, L/6687, 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, was born in Hartfield in 1893. He died of wounds to the head on 7th April 1915 while in hospital at Boulogne, Pas de Calais, France, age 23 and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery: Grave III. D. 80.
He was the son of George and Ellen (Everest) Wheatley. His brother George Wheatley died on 3rd May 1917.
